Chris O’Dowd doesn’t remember that he was once part of the MCU, playing Richard in Thor: The Dark World. Jane Foster’s (Natalie Portman) suitor during the God of Thunder’s two-year absence following the events of 2011’s Thor, he was effectively turned down once Odinson returned and rekindled his relationship with the brilliant astrophysicist.

It’s no secret that in MCU’s catalog of films, The Dark World isn’t exactly among the best. In fact, many regard it as the worst flick in the franchise. Although it was a commercial success earning $644 million against just a $152 million production budget, it was panned by critics for its convoluted narrative, poor pacing and Christopher Eccleston’s forgettable villain (even Hemsworth disliked it). The chemistry between Hemsworth and Foster wasn’t the best and far from the franchise’s other couples such as Iron Man’s Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Captain America’s Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). The film was so forgettable in the sea of Marvel Studios movies that even O’Dowd forgot that he’s a part of it.

Sitting down with MTV News at Sundance promoting his new series, State of the Union, O’Dowd was asked about whether he thinks Richard survived Thanos’ The Decimation in Avengers: Infinity War, which wiped out half of life in the universe. The actor sounded genuinely clueless about the question, and not just because he hasn’t watched the third Avengers flick, but because he forgot that he played a part in the MCU. To be fair to O’Dowd, he only played a very minor role in one of the worst-received Marvel Studios films, and considering that he’s been keeping himself busy since that project, it’s not impossible that the gig slipped from his mind. What’s interesting to know is if people actually remember him playing the part. That said, if the actor himself had forgotten about it, the public may have to jog their memory to even remember how exactly O’Dowd factored in The Dark World.

With no other mention of Richard after his appearance in Thor: The Dark World, fans can’t really blame O’Dowd from forgetting. If anything, even Marvel Studios rarely bring up the flick evidenced by how easily Thor: Ragnarok basically rebooted the whole franchise for the better. There’s no longer any mention of Jane Foster and it doesn’t seem like there are any plans of bringing her back in future films. Unfortunately, with the Reality Stone officially introduced in the sequel, there’s a chance that the MCU will have to revisit the flick in Avengers: Endgame as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes attempt to take down Thanos, who now wields the Infinity Gauntlet with al six Infinity Stones.
