As the recent blockbuster Captain America: Civil War reinforced, it’s becoming less and less common for Marvel Studios to release a film containing only one major hero. While origin stories like Ant-Man and the upcoming Doctor Strange occasionally buck this trend, Marvel movies not featuring some type of team-up are becoming the exception much more than the rule, with even Thor: Ragnarok set to feature The Hulk in a prominent role. With that in mind, Captain America star Chris Evans mentioned he would like to appear in some non Cap-centered MCU installments going forward, in at least a cameo capacity.
While Captain America appearing outside of his own series is rare – with the obvious exception of The Avengers films – Evans isn’t a complete stranger to entertaining cameos, having made a hilarious appearance in Thor: The Dark World via Loki’s morphing abilities. Right now, though, Evans’ top choice for where he wants Cap to appear is in Marvel’s forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, and its probable follow-ups.
The man behind the Star-Spangled Avenger made this known during a recent interview with MTV, after being asked where within the expanding MCU slate he’d like to see his iconic character turn up next.
His runner-up pick for Cap to participate in is Guardians of the Galaxy 2, a desire shared by Daredevil star Elden Henson. Similar to Henson, though, Evans realizes that turning up in a Guardians tale at this point probably wouldn’t make much sense. “Guardians would be fun, wouldn’t it? But it’s very outer spacey. Cap’s more of an Earth-bound guy.”
“Maybe the next Spider-Mans. Those are going to be fantastic. I think Tom [Holland]’s just a great actor, so that might be a fun one to pop up into."
While it would be great from a marketing standpoint, having Captain America show up in Spider-Man: Homecoming could cause some issues. For one, Homecoming hopes to reestablish Spider-Man as a top-tier Marvel hero. Sure, Peter Parker’s fun turn in Civil War made some progress in accomplishing that goal, but headlining a solo effort will be the real test for Spider-Man’s future MCU viability. With that in mind, Marvel might be better served to avoid distracting fans from Parker’s story by adding in another top-tier hero that might steal focus. This becomes especially true when one considers that Robert Downey Jr. is already set to play Iron Man/Tony Stark in Homecoming, a character so charismatic that he’s likely to own every scene he appears in.
Another possible concern is budget and contract issues for the actors involved. Evans is known to only have the Avengers: Infinity War films left on his current Marvel deal, meaning that the studio would likely have to come to some other agreement with him for Homecoming, assuming he isn’t intending on throwing them a freebie. That said, Downey has kept extending his contract past the expiration of his original deal, and Evans may end up doing the same. If so, fans may get to see more interactions between the formerly scrawny kid from Brooklyn and the upstart teenage hero from Queens.
