Tom Holland looks creepy in a new image from Joe and Anthony Russo’s latest movie, Cherry. After working on three Marvel Cinematic Universe installments together, the trio is tackling very different material for their next collaboration. Holland stars in Cherry as an Army medic with PTSD who starts robbing banks to support his crippling opioid addiction. The film is based on a true story, drawing from Nico Walker’s autobiographical book. From that description, it’s clear Cherry is a clear departure from the spectacle-driven comic book blockbusters the Russos are famous for
Late last year as Cherry started filming, viewers got a taste of Holland’s radically different look in the film. Photos revealed the actor with a shaved head for the drama, sending the Internet into a frenzy. Currently, Cherry does not have a release date, but the Russos are busy in post-production. As they continue to put the movie together, they’ve shared another image of Holland.
Taking to their official Instagram account, the Russos posted a picture from the Cherry editing bay, showing a scene where Holland’s wearing a shirt and tie. Since the actor has hair in this shot, it’s possible this is from early in the movie, before Holland’s character has a transformation. Check out the picture in the space below:
Since his big breakout in Captain America: Civil War, Holland’s become known for the pure, boyish enthusiasm he brings to his roles. That quality is what made his take on Peter Parker a fan-favorite, and audiences can see it on display in other films of his like Onward (where he voices a young elf). It goes without saying audiences are going to see another side of Holland in Cherry, where he’ll have a chance to show off his serious dramatic chops by playing a damaged and broken individual. Depending on how things play out, Holland may find himself in the Oscar discussion for Cherry. The film is poised to comment on some rather somber and relevant issues (veterans suffering from PTSD and the opioid crisis), so if it delivers on its promise, awards voters could be hard-pressed to ignore it.
With the Russos in editing right now, a Cherry trailer might be on the horizon. As of this writing, the film is without a distributor, but odds are it won’t have trouble being picked up. The Russos and Holland are big names audiences are familiar with and like, meaning there should be sizable interest in Cherry when it’s ready to be released. Odds are it isn’t going to break any box office records like Avengers: Endgame, but cinephiles will likely be curious to see the Marvel veterans try their hand at something new.
